About the Item
English Creamware Pottery Teapot and Cover with Rare Fish Scale Design
Origin: Probably Leeds, Yorkshire
Date: Circa 1770s
Description: This creamware teapot and cover exhibit a cylindrical form, featuring raised beading at the foot and shoulder of the pot, as well as at the rim of the cover. The body and cover are adorned with a repetitive fish scale design in orange and white. Notably, the double loop handles terminate in molded green leaf motifs with an orange flower. The spout is reeded.
It is plausible that this distinctive decoration was executed at the Leeds enameling shop.
Condition: There is a repaired chip to the lower spout and a hairline on the base (see photo). The cover has an old break.
Dimensions:
Height: 5 inches
Width: 6 3/4 inches
Depth: 3 3/4 inches
Provenance: Marie Whitney Antiques (remains of old paper label)
Reference: For a similar form teapot, refer to Creamware and other English Pottery at Temple Newsam House, Leeds by Peter Walton (Page 191-192, #770).
A Passion for Pottery: Further Selections From The Henry H. Weldon Collection, , Peter Williams & Pat Halfpenny, Page 145, #86, for a teapot with a scale pattern also attributed to Leeds, Yorkshire.
