Georgian Davenport PAIR of Side Plates in Stork Ptn No 24 Ironstone, circa 1815
About the Item
This is a finely hand painted PAIR of early Stone China (Ironstone) Side or Desert Plates, which date to the George 111 period, circa 1815. Made by the DAVENPORT factory of Longport, Staffordshire Potteries, England.
The plates are very well potted with a slightly notched rim.
Both plates are beautifully hand painted in a pattern called "Stork", which is pattern number 24 and one of Davenport's very few Chinoiserie patterns.
This bold pattern features polychrome enamels with a stork, chrysanthemum and peony in an oriental garden. There are under-glaze blue transfers in under-glaze cobalt blue, with orange, pink, and brown over-glaze enamels.
This pattern is a match to the Ralph & James Clews pattern called " Crane in Chinese Garden". A photo of the Clews plate in this pattern is on page 142 of Griselda Lewis' "A Collector's History of English Pottery".
The mark on the base of the Plates is Godden's 1183, a blue printed DAVENPORT STONE CHINA mark with anchor, together with a hand painted 24 by the foot rim, all dating these plates to the period 1805-1820.
Overall a fine Georgian pair of beautifully painted Side Plates for display or use.
