About the Item
This large mochaware mug was made by Don Carpentier, a potter known for his recreations of early 19th-century American and English slip-decorated pottery using a foot-powered lathe.
The design features an orange ground decorated with rows of bold cat's eye slip design in dark brown, blue, and white — a classic mochaware motif.
Around the top, a band of impressed green rouletting is set between two bands of blue slip.
At the foot, the creamware body is turned with subtle rings.
The handle is gracefully curved with impressed acanthus leaf terminals splashed in green.*
The glossy surface and meticulous execution reflect Carpentier's expertise in recreating early 19th-century slipware with remarkable authenticity.
Marks: The underside of the mug is impressed (see image) with D. C and 99, indicating that Carpentier made it in 1999.
Dimensions: 6.5" tall x 4.5" diameter at the top and 5" diameter at the base
Condition: Excellent
Price: $725
*Don Carpentier carefully studied and reproduced 18th- and 19th-century techniques.
He used traditional copper oxide to produce that bright green hue.
It's applied as a wash over the impressed decoration, and the glaze fixes the color in place during firing.
Background of Mochaware: Mochaware pottery is slip-decorated, lathe-turned, earthenware with bands of colored slip
applied to buff-colored or white bodies.
