Modern Royal Copenhagen Aluminia Faience Group

About

This grouping of three faience pieces from the Royal Copenhagen / Aluminia line Tenera designed by Nils Thorssen in the 1960s has a wonderful aura. These three were decorated with organic stylized floral motifs by three women artists, all Danes and designing for Royal Copenhagen. Inge-Lise Koefoed, Kari Christiansen and Beth Beyren. The price is for the set of three. Nils Thorsson (1898-1975) ceramic artist and designer for Royal Copenhagen. Nils joined Royal Copenhagen as an apprentice in 1912, and graduated from the Royal Danish Academy in 1917. He went on to become Royal Copenhagens most prolific designer. He was Artistic director at Royal Copenhagen from 1949 while also artistic director of Alumina also from 1928-1969 He designed at least four of their best known production ranges – Solberg (1930s), Marselis (Alumina 1950s) Tenera (1960s) and Baca (1964 -). All three pieces are from Thorssen's Tenera series with the smaller of the two vases by artist Kari Chrisiansen. It was manufactured c. 1961 and is marked Royal Copenhagen along with the artist's signature/model no. Aluminia bought Royal Copenhagen in 1882, with Royal Copenhagen specializing in porcelain and Aluminia with faience.. In 1969, the complete faience line was moved to Royal Copenhagen. In the period preceding that, it was not uncommon to see the same artists and the same designs produced under either factory's name. The taller vase is by Inge-Lise Koefoed and has a different design on each side. Among the artist's signature and other marks it is marked Aluminia. The bowl is by Beth Beyren and is marked Aluminia as well as the artist signature/model no. Measure: Taller Inge-Lise Koefoed vase 7" wide x 5" deep and 11" high. Shorter Kari Christiansen vase 5" wide x 4 1/2" deep and 7" high. Beth Breyen bowl 6 3/4" square x 1 3/8" high. Price is for all three pieces.

About Royal Copenhagen (Designer)

Producers of the finest in Danish porcelain, Royal Copenhagen is a company steeped in tradition. Its celebrated blue-and-white china patterns as well as its famed hallmark depicting the royal crown and three waves—symbolizing the monarch who founded the company and the three major waterways of Denmark—are emblems of master craftsmanship.

Royal Copenhagen was founded in 1775 by Queen Juliane Marie. Years earlier, after the death of her husband, King Frederick V, Juliane’s stepson ascended the throne. Shortly into his reign, he went insane, and the Queen became the head of Denmark and its small empire. She sought to improve Denmark’s economy and founded factories around the country to promote domestic growth and international trade. Royal Copenhagen was one of the first of these. Royal Copenhagen first made dinnerware and vases with blue-and-white motifs inspired by Chinese porcelain, then the rage in aristocratic Europe. Many of these designs are still made today.

Apart from its classic patterns, Royal Copenhagen has adapted to the changing styles of time and appeals to many different tastes. Their prolific body of work includes Rococo-style porcelain statues that incorporate stylistic floral patterns in an Art Nouveau style, as well as modern vases by such noted 20th century Danish ceramists as Axel Salto. Whether used for special occasions or displayed as part of a design collection, Royal Copenhagen pieces represent a legacy of the highest quality.
