Pair of West German Vases, Circa 1970's

About the Item

An unusual and highly decorative pair of West German vases in the Grecian style.  The green tapering bodies with double looped handles above a frieze with scenes of ancient armed warriors.  The base marked 'W Germany 335-40'.

    Carl Cooper (1912-1966) was born in Williamstown, Victoria, Australia.  He was a ceramicist associated with the influential Boyd family and in the mid-1940s he worked with Arthur Merric Boyd and John Perceval at the AMB pottery in Murrumbeena just outside Melbourne. ​Cooper lost the use of his legs from polio contracted in his twenties.  Each day, Arthur Boyd’s brother David would push Cooper’s wheelchair to the pottery.
