About the Item

We are pleased to offer several ceramic works by the superlative young contemporary artist Jay James Forsythe of Oxbrook Pottery. A 2004 graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design’s sculpture department, he studied drawing under the noted multidisciplinary artist Alfred Decredico and figure modeling techniques from the sculptor and designer Alba Corrado. Forsythe’s interest in clay as a primary medium for sculpting figures and abstract forms through wax and slip casting techniques led him to eventually explore wheel thrown vessels and develop his firing skills. Over the last several years his studio work has been dedicated strictly to hand crafted ceramics, focused on wheel thrown vessels in the modernist tradition. Many of the mid 20th century potters that provide him inspiration also foster his inquisitiveness to recapture their lost and forgotten methods. To this end he is constantly testing and developing his own glaze formulas and manners of application. With over 30 years of experience in American art pottery and modernist ceramics, we estimate that Forsythe's work is among the finest being crafted in the United States today, and deserving of attention from collectors and museum curators alike. This bottle form vase has a flared rim atop an elongated neck and classic Asian style body. The combination of glazes Forsythe employs here have resulted in a micro-volcanic matte glaze with controlled pocking. Final image shows three works by Forsythe together; this listing is for the vase on the left.
