Pretty and refined pair of small serving tureens; they have a well-proportioned, square design typical of Art Deco, graceful and pleasing floral decorations on the lid and body help to lighten the rigidity of the form; the rim and knob are ornamented in pure gold. On the bottom, we find the maker's mark: the famous Arthur J. Wilkinson Firm located on Newport Lane in Burslem, near Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire County, an ancient locality famous for the production of pottery and porcelain. From the mark, we can accurately identify the year of production of the two soup tureens: 1947. In 1881 the old Central factories in Burslem passed into the hands of Wilkinson & Hulme; in 1885 Hulme retired from the business and Arthur J. Wilkinson continued alone, AJ Wilkinson...

Prattware English Pottery Pearlware Tea Canister, Macaroni Figures, Possibly Bankfoot Pottery, Prestonpans. Scotland, Circa 1790-1800. The pearlware pottery tea caddy is decorated with "Macaroni" figures. On one side is depicted a gentleman wearing an exaggeratedly high wig with his servant standing beside him. On the other side is a similarly caricatured lady and her servant. The caddy was possibly made in Scotland at Prestonpans where plaster of Paris moulds were recovered during excavations. Plaster of Paris moulds recovered during excavations below the floor of the Belfield Pottery in Prestonpans and almost certainly dumped from the earlier Bankfoot pottery. Dimensions: 5 1/8 inches high x 3-1/4 inches wide x 2 inches deep. Condition: Good with a small firing line to the foot-see photo. The figures depicted on the tea caddy are modelled in very full relief and painted in green and brown. The narrow sides of the tea caddy are painted with a flowering vine. In the canted corners of the caddy is a stylized underglaze blue leaf. During the 18th century, "macaroni" was the satirical term for men who sported elaborate clothing and continental affectations. Lampooning various occupations and specific styles, these are reproductions of period cartoons. These amusing figures are after English caricatures produced between 1765 and 1790. The satirical jibes were directed at the young moderns of the time, known as "macaronies." A group of privileged young Englishmen adopted styles and manners they had admired during their travels in Italy and France. They formed the Macaroni Club (macaroni being virtually unknown in England at the time), an eating club where they vied with one another in matters of dress and manners. Extremes developed and soon spread into larger society. With ribbon-and-lace festooned clothing, prim-verging-on-prissy manners and absurd coiffures, macaronies (both male and female) were subjects of ridicule. This is a cup & saucer duo in the rarely seen, hand painted "Pine Grove" Pattern by the renowned Art Deco designer Clarice Cliff. This piece dates to the late Bizarre period, Circa 1935. The Pine Grove Pattern was Newport pattern 6449, having boldly drawn black, blue and green fir trees with orange/red trunks, the whole design then covered in thin grey, blue & green bands. This pattern is rarely seen but has the distinctive "Clarice" look of the early Bizarre pieces. A great Italian Post Modern art pottery bowl by noted artist , Pino Castagna . Signed. Biography: Pino Castagna was born in Castelgomberto, Italy, in 1932, and studied in the schools of fine arts of Verona and Venice. Together with Scottish sculptor Michael Noble and his wife, Ida Borleti, from 1957 and 1963 he designed a creative skill stimulation programme for the mental patients of the Verona psychiatric hospital, as well as directed a ceramics school and workshop in Garda. His growing interest in sculpture was encouraged by frequent visits to Paris and Milan. In 1969, he moved his workshop to Costermano del Garda, Italy, where he currently lives and works. Since then, Castagna’s work has been characterised by constant experimentation with new techniques and materials as diverse as ceramics, aluminium, stone, wood, concrete, strings or tree branches. Each of these offers a new and original expressive possibility, which the artist explores by testing the materials’ plastic potential and pushing their endurance limits.
