About the Item
Antique old Sleep Eye Indian Pitchers with cobalt blue on the bottoms with designs of Indian Head, trees, and Teepee's. Marked "Monmouth" on the bottom. Authentic Weir Pottery, not a reproduction, Great condition for its age, lots of crazing due to age and on the handle is an Indian's head and the top has some shine loss. Its 8" to highest point and 8.7" from spout to handle and 6" across the bottom. Small chip on bottom of one. Image is of Chief Sleepy Eye (Ish-Tak-Ha-Ba)Chief Sleepy Eye lived from 1780 to 1860, and was nick-named "sleepy eye" because of his heavily lidded eyes. His people made their home by Sleepy Eye Lake in 1857, which was originally called Pretty Water By The Big Trees. He was Chief from about 1825 until his death in 1860. Weir Pottery Company was one of the seven pottery companies that became the Western Stoneware Company. Western produced Sleepy ceramic premiums from 1906 through 1937. Pitcher sizes included half pint, pin, quart, half gallon, and gallon. The same shape was used. The profile of an Indian wearing a war bonnet was on the front, the revise had a crouching Indian, trees, or wigwam.
