1940s Sterling Silver Canteen of Cutlery for Twelve Persons

An exceptional, fine and impressive vintage George VI English straight sterling silver Hanoverian rat tail pattern 86 piece canteen of cutlery for twelve persons - boxed; an addition to our vintage flatware collection The pieces of this exceptional vintage George VI sterling silver canteen of cutlery for twelve persons have been crafted in the Hanoverian rat tail pattern. The surface of each handle is plain and unembellished, apart from a pip to the anterior terminal. The silver spoons feature impressive rat tail ornamentation to the reverse of the bowl. The original sterling silver forks have three tines/prongs; a fine and desirable feature of the service. This 86 piece canteen of cutlery includes: Basic Service: 12 Table forks 12 Soup spoons 12 Dessert forks 12 Dessert spoons 6 Table/Serving spoons 6 Egg spoons 12 Teaspoons 12 Coffee spoons Additional Pieces: Pair of sauce ladles The components of this London made cutlery service have been crafted by the renowned silversmith and retailers C W Fletcher & Son Ltd in 1943. The anterior surface of each egg spoon retains the original gilding to the bowls. This exceptional sterling silver English cutlery set is fitted to an oak wood lift up lid and lift out tray canteen box, with a velvet lined interior. The impressive and original box bears brass fitments, including a vacant shield shaped cartouche and a plain escutcheon. The interior of the box bears the retailer's plaque 'Ogdens, Court Jewellers, Harrogate & London'. Condition This vintage silver flatware set is a superior gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The original canteen box has been professionally polished by a cabinet maker and is in presentation condition, Full hallmarks struck to the reverse of each piece are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the superior gauge of silver.     A very good part silver table service or canteen for six people in fiddle and thread pattern, consisting of six serving or tablespoons, six table forks, six dessert forks, six dessert spoons, eight dinner knives, six dessert knives, six butter knives, two basting spoons, two ladles, and a soup ladle. All made predominantly by George Adams and hallmarked as follows: table spoons London 1842, table forks London 1828 by William Chawner, dessert forks London 1855, dessert spoons London 1845, basting spoons London 1845, ladles London 1875, soup ladle London 1831 by John, Henry and Charles Lias. The dinner and dessert knives have filled silver handles and marked for Sheffield from the 1990s. They have stainless steel blades. The butter knives have filled silver handles marked for Sheffield 1932 by Barker Bros. These also have stainless steel blades. All the pieces are in superb condition. There is no more than expected wear to any of the pieces and all hallmarks are clear and legible. All the spoons have good bowls with no misshaping or wear to the tips. Fork tines show some wear, more so to the dessert forks. Some of the pieces are crested with a lion rampant and some are monogrammed.
