A fine vintage 1961 sterling silver flatware set by International Silver of Meriden, CT, in the highly collectible Vision pattern designed by Ronald Hayes Pearson, first introduced in 1961, shaped proud and pure for a skyward age. Jewel Stern in her book 'Modernism in American Silver, 20th century design notes that the name of the pattern is "an allusion to both designer and maker as visionaries and trendsetters. Vision was the most radical, innovative production-line sterling pattern offered by a major manufacturer during the century." Vision, was introduced in 1961 in a double-page advertisement in which it was romanticized as having been shaped "proud and pure" into new forms for a 'skyward age," and the designer lauded as the "laureate" of recent design competitions. Of note was the name of the pattern, an allusion to both designer and maker as visionaries and trendsetters. This theme was reflected in International's innovative 1962 advertising campaign, "Two things to own," a pairing of residences in various architectural styles with a compatible International sterling pattern. For "Two things to own in Extreme Modern," Vision was paired with a house perched dramatically on a hillside in California. Indeed, Vision was the most radical, innovative production-line sterling pattern offered by a major manufacturer during the century. When viewed from above, the plain surfaces of the crisp, wafer-thin upright handles of the spoons and forks flowed uninterruptedly into rounded bowls to accentuate their elongation. Flow was expressed in profile by the undulating curve of the arched handles, a sensuous element integrated with the clean lines of the design. Thge join between the solid silver knife handle and its slightly triangulated blade was subtle. Appropriately, the 'skyward age" Vision pattern was used to set the moon Room table in International's exhibition at the 1964 New York World's Fair. The flatware is incredibly comfortable in the hand. Great weight too. There are seven (8) place pieces per 12 place settings. Please note the iced tea/parfait spoon and cocktail fork are not illustrated. The place pieces and lengths are: 12 dinner/luncheon forks (7 1/8 inches). 12 salad/dessert forks (6 1/4 inches). 12 dinner/luncheon knives (8 3/4 inches). 12 butter knives (6 3/4 inches). 12 teaspoons (6 1/4 inches). 12 oval dessert/soup spoons (7 1/4 inches). 12 iced tea/parfait spoons (7 1/2 inches). 6 cocktail forks (6 inces) Serving pieces: Serving spoon (9 1/8 inches). Slotted serving spoon (9 1/8 inches). Gravy ladle (7 inches). Salad Set, fork and spoon (9 1/8 inches). Sugar/jam etc spoon (6 1/8 inches).
