The coat of arms of The Hague
Since our country is a kingdom (from 1814), every municipality should have a coat of arms approved by the Supreme Council of Nobility. This also applies to the municipality of The Hague.
'In gold a stepping stork, holding in its beak a saber eel (black). The shield covered with an antique burial crown
Shortly before 1816, the coat of arms of The Hague had also been officially established, by Emperor Napoleon himself, namely on October 26, 1811 when The Hague was elevated to 'bonne ville de l'empire' after the annexation of the kingdom of Holland to France.
The stork is known as a lucky bird. Traditionally, this migratory bird is common in this region. These animals were treated with great respect; they were cared for and fed. There was even a special keeper for the storks!
