About the Item

Presented here is a rare and exceptional pair of hummingbird serving utensils designed by Emilia Castillo for the internationally renowned Los Castillo workshop of Taxco, Mexico. This sculptural set exemplifies the fusion of artistry and functionality that made Los Castillo one of the most celebrated silver ateliers of the 20th century. Each utensil features a beautifully detailed hummingbird finial, with a polished brass crest and elongated beak, lending a sense of motion and whimsy to the design. The handles are richly inlaid with natural malachite and lapis lazuli panels, their deep greens and vibrant blues contrasting dramatically with the gleaming silverplate. The serving spoon is further distinguished by a flowing cut-out motif, echoing the workshop’s modernist approach to decorative detail. The underside of each piece bears the full Los Castillo hallmark — Los Castillo, Taxco, Hecho en Mexico, TA-01 Plateado #34 — confirming their authenticity and origin. Measurements: 13.25 inches long x 2.5 inches wide x 2 inches high Founded in 1939 by Don Antonio Castillo, Los Castillo quickly rose to prominence as a leader in Mexican modernist design, fusing traditional silversmithing with bold new forms. Emilia Castillo, continuing the family’s legacy, introduced organic motifs inspired by nature — hummingbirds, reptiles, and floral themes — often enhanced with stone inlays and mixed-metal details. This set illustrates her distinctive contribution, combining whimsy with technical mastery. For collectors, these utensils offer a rare opportunity to acquire an authentic Los Castillo creation that bridges generations of innovation within the same family. For interior designers, they serve not only as functional serving implements but also as decorative objects of art, ideal for enhancing a tablescape or showcased as part of a curated display of Mexican modernist silver. A sophisticated and playful pair, these hummingbird serving utensils embody the enduring artistry of Los Castillo and the creative vision of Emilia Castillo — timeless works that celebrate the beauty of Taxco’s silversmithing tradition.

Emilia Castillo Sterling Silver & Volcanic Stone Molcajete with Spoon, Mexico, Later 20th Century A sterling silver and volcanic stone molcajete (mortar) set is a functional sculptural object that bridges traditional craftsmanship and modern luxury. The handmade serving piece is modeled after the ancient Mesoamerican molcajete, traditionally used for grinding spices and preparing salsa or guacamole. Castillo’s refined interpretation elevates the form with a hammered sterling silver bowl adorned with bold silver orbs encircling the rim, paired with a substantial curved-handled sterling silver spoon. The inner bowl rests within a hand-carved, tripod-footed volcanic stone base, offering both contrast and stability. This sculptural piece draws inspiration from the traditional Mexican molcajete...
