About the Item

A vintage figural Hen Pâté Terrine made for Laurent Caugant, a Bretagne pâté maker since 1927 – circa 1950s. Laurent’s son Michel created these figural forms as containers for selling his fathers pâté in their luxury food shop. They rose in popularity as their patrons sought to collect all of the different animal terrines that were made. Each form contained the pâté made from the animal represented. The two-piece hen terrine is made and glazed by hand, the lid lifts off to show a shallow serving bowl. The brightly glazed hen with her red head and blue tail sits on a bed of green grass. Charming detail to the mold. This is one of the larger Caugant pâté servers produced. The bottom is printed: Cette piece en faience veritable, a ete entirement realisee a la main. Je nous la propose en exclusivite. – Michel Caugant Translation: This piece is true faience and was made entirely by hand. I want to recommend it exclusively. 8 in. L x 5 in. W x 8 in. H In wonderful vintage condition, showing the expected light surface wear.
