About the Item

This is an old pine tray made in Japan. Japan has had a long history of tea culture, and trays like this were used for sencha tea and other drinks. They are also used when serving green tea during entertaining guests. Pine wood was often used as a material in this tray culture. Pine is one of the woods with the highest oil content, so over time the color changes to a dark candy brown. This tray was originally painted brown, but it is thought to have changed to a darker brown as it was used. It is sawn mainly from the core of the pine, so you can use it while looking at the beautiful grain. The center is polished flat and clean, but the edge is chipped, leaving traces of the chisel used to carve it. This is also thought to have been carved intentionally. The edges are also carved with a little ubo-mi, which changes the outline of the oval. It is an interesting tray that incorporates attractive variations in a monotonous shape while making use of the wood grain, because it is a simple oval tray. Because the core is used, cracks will inevitably occur due to slight warping and drying of the wood. The cracks are held in place with two metal rivets. I think that is also one of the charms. There is another thin crack, but it is left as it is. There is a photo of two cups placed on it, but the cups are slightly tilted because they are slightly bent, but I don't think it will cause any major problems in use. Please understand that it is an old item. In addition to placing cups, I think it would be nice to use it as a confectionery tray to serve sweets. It is thick and has a solid weight (1.1 kg). This beautiful and impressive tray is hard to find. It is an attractive and recommended item that will differentiate you from others.
