Townshends Birmingham Aluminium and Electroplated Patent Communion Set

About the Item

A rare and unusual Art Nouveau Townshends Ltd, Birmingham aluminium and electroplate patent communion set comprising of 24 silver plated wine cups and dated 15th April 1905. This unusual set is cut from light aluminium and comprises of two sections both with similar shaped Gothic style handles with a lift-off section revealing space for twenty-four wine cups. The set includes nineteen small simple bucket shaped silver-plated wine cups each marked EPNS. The holder has original red velvet lining where the sections inter-connect and the stand is raised on four small ball shaped feet. The communion set has various impressed marks to the base including TOWNSHENDS LTD BIRMINGHAM PATENT No8052 and the date 14/4/1905. It has a further patent mark reading PAT No 15983 dated 1913 and with registration mark Rd. No. 622062. An interesting, rare and unusual item. Provenance: Acquired in the UK Art Market. In good overall condition with surface marking and wear to the body of the holder and missing five wine cups. A bolt to the base appears to also have been replaced.
