Antique English Silver Plated Serving Tray with Neoclassical Styled Decoration

About the Item

This antique oval silver plated serving tray was made by the Merdian Silver Plate Co. of England in approximately 1920 and done in a Neoclassical Revival style. The tray has bold engraving on the top surface with a monogram in the center, surrounded with stylized flowers. The handles are decorated with raised faces and the outside rim of the tray is decorated with stylized leaves and flowers. The tray is clearly signed on the bottom with a medallion with the Meridian Silver Plate Co. name and logo.

    This very elaborate and well executed silver plated serving tray is unsigned, but presumed to have originated from the United States, possibly by Meridian, and dating to approximately 1890 and done in the period Aesthetic Movement style. The tray is is quite heavy for its size and heavily plated, and has a unique fortress shape with flanged sides with ornately cast scrolling leaf decoration. The surface of the tray is engraved with a vignette of tall ships which is framed in an elaborate scrolling leaf and foliage motif.
