Christopher Dresser Original Letter Rack for Hukin & Heath 1881

About the Item

Silver-plated letter folding rack, designed by Christopher Dresser circa 1880 and manufactured by Hukin & Heath, Birmingham circa 1881, in a toast rack form with one central fixed division and six flanking moveable divisions on an arched base and bun feet; 12cm height. Maker's mark, 255 and PODR lozenge-shaped mark for 9 May 1881. Very famous designs by Dr. Christopher Dresser, the Victoria Albert Museum, and NY Met Museum own similar, these are very rare, and astonishing pieces. You will enjoy it.

    Wear consistent with age and use. Complete and in working order, one of the two smallest divisions slightly bent, plating rubbed in places and wear scratches, the divisions moving easily, rives undamaged, not re-plated.

    Wonderful aesthetic movement tea cup in hand-painted and hand-gilt porcelain by the English manufactory Minton. Blue background with stylized red flowers imitating the cloisonné technique, very common in the Japonisme ware.
