About the Item

Exemplifying the elegance of the Louis XV style, this incredible silvered metal dish or plate, expertly crafted by Christofle during the 19th century, stands as a rare treasure. Its distinguishing feature lies in the artful lid, fashioned in trompe l'oeil style to resemble folded damask napkins. The lid boasts molded scalloped edges and a two-part hinge adorned with intricate foliage scrolls. Originally conceived by Christofle in 1868, this particular model is exceptionally scarce, with only a few known examples, many of which reside in esteemed institutions like France's Musée d’Orsay, cataloged under inventory number OAO 2086. Markings on the plate include: - Before the silversmith stamp: 104 - Beneath the plate: 1014342 - Beneath the plate: CHRISTOFLE Designed with versatility, this dish, initially intended for serving roasted chestnuts, adapts effortlessly to accommodate delicate dishes or fruits, courtesy of its distinctive shape. It earned a place of honor in the "Le Temps des collections" exhibition at the Musée Industriel de la Corderie Vallois in Notre-Dame-de-Bondeville, France, during 2017-2018, and more recently at the Paris Art Déco Louvre museum. Christofle, established in Paris in 1830, commands global acclaim as one of the most esteemed silversmiths. Its renown reached new heights when Napoleon III commissioned a grand set for the Tuileries Palace in 1851, complete with magnificent silver-plated centerpieces. Some now grace the permanent exhibit at the Paris Museum of Decorative Arts, while others are housed at the Metropolitan Museum.
