English Victorian 5-Piece Tea Coffee Set with Tray by John Round, 19th Century

About the Item

This is a very impressive antique English Victorian silver plated five-piece tea and coffee set by the renowned silversmiths, John Round & Son, Sheffield, circa 1880 in date. This magnificent set comprises a wonderful coffee pot, teapot, sugar bowl with lid, milk jug with lid and tray. All the pieces with exception of the exquisite large oval tray are of a very attractive round shape and all five pieces feature magnificent engraved and embossed floral, foliage and ribbon decoration, with the addition of very elegant dotted chased motifs to the edges. The whole composition creates a very distinguished style given by the harmonious yet sumptuous interplay of movements. The coffee pot, teapot and the lid of the sugar bowl have splendid round finials with lovely chased clover decoration, and the bowl has a gilt interior to prevent corrosion. Each piece has matching scroll cast handles with beautiful beaded and foliate motifs. The tray features a delightful vacant oval cartouche to the centre, which would be perfect for engraving your family crest. Each piece bears the makers mark 'JR & S' and the makers' stamp for John Round & Son, as well as the registration number 440. It is in really excellent condition and ready to grace your table. The business proved successful and the firm in partnership with his son Edwin went under the title of John Round & Son (1863). In 1874 the firm became John Round & Son Ltd and in 1886 the business of Ridge, Allcard & Co (Lions Works, Eyre Lane) was amalgamated and John Ridge became the manager. Supposedly, in this period the JR & S mark was sometimes accompanied by the "four tridents" trade mark, previously used by Joseph Ridge. The main factory was the renewed Tudor Works, Tudor Street, Sheffield while various showrooms operated in London. The firm was active at Tudor Works Tudor St (1852-1934) and Pond Hill (1935-1957).
