About the Item
Richard Richardson Sheffield Edwardian Silverplate Tilting Spirit Kettle/Teapot
Early 20th Century Edwardian tilting silver-plated teapot on stand with warmer, also known as a spirit kettle, by Sheffield silversmith Richard Richardson (English, 1796-1940), c.1900.
Marked "RR Sheffield" on bottom, with the official mark of Richard Richardson as registered with the Sheffield Assay Office in 1884. This tilting kettle has beautiful fluted details and wooden handles.
Kettle with stand measures 13"H x 10"L x 7"D.
Richard Richardson was a silversmith and pewterer active in Sheffield, England. In 1796, he established his own firm which would remain in family hands until its closure in the middle of the 20th Century.
From 1873 to 1883, the company operated out of a shop at Cornwall Works Pond Hill in Sheffield. Thereafter, from 1884-1890, Richardson’s place of business was located at 167 Norfolk Street; then, from 1891 to 1925, on Scotland Street. He also had a presence at the showroom at Ely Place, Holborn Circus, in London in 1895.
The signature Richardson maker’s mark—the uppercase initials “RR”—was registered with the Sheffield Assay Office in October of 1884 and was put to use most extensively from 1892 to 1940.
Among other styles, Richardson was well-known for his forays into the Victorian.
Expansion continued apace for many decades: in 1889, Richardson assumed control of the John Harrison Firm. Around 1940, the business closed permanently.
