About the Item

Silver-Plated Adjustable Wine Caddy by Mappin & Webb, England, Circa 1900–1910. Style: Edwardian with Dresser-influenced industrial design A rare and elegantly engineered silver-plated adjustable wine caddy or bottle stand, attributed to Mappin & Webb, with hallmarks including the maker’s stamp M&W, model number 5990, and British patent registration No. 432812. Dating to the transitional period between late Victorian and early Edwardian design (circa 1900–1910), this piece exemplifies a fusion of mechanical utility and refined ornament. The pierced gallery collar adjusts to four heights—6", 8", 8.25", and 9"—to accommodate a range of wine or Champagne bottles. The angular side handle allows for easy, stable pouring, while the circular base tray (3.90" diameter) features a raised rim and engraved “D” monogram. The full width to handle is 6.5", with an overall height of 11.75". Stylistically, the piece reflects the influence of Christopher Dresser, whose groundbreaking approach to industrial design and geometric form ushered in a new era of functional elegance. The caddy’s precision mechanics, clean lines, and minimalist form stand in contrast to ornate Victorian barware, offering a distinctly modern sensibility rooted in purpose and balance. An exceptional and hard-to-find piece of English design—perfect for display on a bar cart, sideboard, or in a curated collection of silver or wine accessories.
