This is an attractive silver plated Victorian two handled tantalus and cut-glass drinks set, dated 1892. The pair of decanters are of superb quality cut-glass and are in excellent condition, as are the matching set of six cut-glass glasses. It as a stunning central cut-glass ice bucket with silver plated hinged lid, which would also be perfect for use as a biscuit box. It bears the engraved inscription: To Mr Wm. Walker from His Friends at Messrs. Adam & Cos. Office Aberdeen April 1892 It bears the makers mark of the renowned silversmiths Roberts & Belk of Sheffield, England. The craftsmanship is second to none and this beautiful set is sure to add a touch of elegance to your dining experience. Condition: In excellent condition, please see photos for confirmation of condition. History of Roberts & Belk, The firm was established as Furniss, Poles & Turner. The first hallmark was entered in Sheffield Assay Office as "plate worker, Furnival Street, Sheffield" on December 20, 1810. From circa 1822-1945 the firm traded as William Briggs (hallmark entered as Plate Worker, Button Lane on August 14, 1822). Later William Briggs entered in partnership with Samuel Roberts and Joseph Slater. In 1845 the firm, trading as Roberts & Slater, silver and electroplate manufacturers, entered its hallmark in Sheffield Assay Office (September 1, 1845. Address: Furnival Street). After the retirement of Joseph Slater (1858) the activity was continued until 1863 under the style Roberts & Briggs (hallmark entered on September 1, 1859). In 1863, after the retirement of William Briggs, the firm changed to Roberts & Belk (the new partner was Charles Belk). Its first hallmarks were entered in Sheffield Assay Office on February 1, 1864. In 1879, after the retirement of Samuel Roberts, the activity was continued solely by Charles Belk maintaining the style Roberts & Belk. Besides the Sheffield factory, the firms were active also in London, with showrooms at 28 Ely Place, Holborn (1858) and later at Gresham House, 24 Holborn Viaduct (1883). In 1901 the firm became Roberts & Belk Ltd and in 1961 was bought by C.J. Vander Ltd. Tantalus is a type of liquor decanter in which the bottle stoppers are locked down tightly by a metal bar. This was to prevent the theft of the contents by servants. Like the name suggests, the decanters themselves are visible, drawing temptation while unattainable. A key is required for entry. The most common types of tantalus holds three bottles or decanters while there are also smaller types housing only two. There are many different forms of tantalus. Often the encasement has metal handles on both sides and ornately carved decor. Crystal and metal versions are also a beautiful option when choosing a tantalus. Tantalus derived its name from the story of the mythological Greek king, Tantalus. To be tantalized is to be tempted with the unattainable, and the king, condemned to an eternity in Hades, was sorely tested. He was forced to stand forever in water that, when he bent to drink, would recede and to gaze upon foods he could only reach for and never grasp. The 1800s saw our Victorian predecessors apply the King’s name to the lockable decanter.
