About the Item
Trophy Old Sheffield Scallop Shell Shaped Serving Dish with Conch Shell Feet by Henry Wilkinson & Co of Sheffield, With Crossed Key Mark. The dish was likely a prize from a competition at St. Mary's College in 1940. The inscription "PG-ELT" most likely refers to the winning student's name, or initials of the competition, and the student's enrollment year. In 1831, Henry Wilkinson & Co, silversmiths and platers of Norfolk Street, registered a silver mark. Wilkinson had an office in Fleet Street. In 1852, he took out a licence for electro-plate from Elkington. By 1868, besides electro-plate, Wilkinson was manufacturing silver and plated wares, cutlery, forks, and spoons. Further silver marks were registered in Sheffield 1852 and 1890; and a mark in London was registered in 1857 (Culme, 1987). Trade marks included ‘HW & Co’ and crossed keys.
