19th C English Figural Sterling & Crystal Owl Perfume Bottle by Sampson Mordan

About the Item

19th-century English figural sterling silver and crystal owl perfume bottle by Sampson Mordan for the French market. An exceptional example is the owl's head, realistically cast and modeled, with a large inset of reverse painted yellow and black eyes, a threaded collar, and a cork upper interior. For such a diminutive work, it is fully hallmarked. Stamped for London, date letter 'U' for 1895, with makers mark "SM&CO" for Sampson Mordan & Company. On the back of the owl's left ear there is a tiny French hallmark 'Weevil' (guaranteeing the silver content is above). 800 standard) The lower part is a crystal-clear ovoid perfume bottle with a sterling top. The bottle opens and closes easily and is secure. In very well-cared-for antique condition, there is a slight indentation on the owl's head.
