Sampson Mordan & Co. Antique Silver Rabbit Pepperette, London, 1899

About the Item

A late Victorian sterling silver pepperette in the form of a rabbit or hare, made by Sampson Mordan & Co of London in 1899. It is very finely modelled as a rabbit sitting up on its haunches with a removable head to be filled with pepper. This model is very rare and desirable, and also highly charming. The body of the rabbit and fur have superb detail and are in very good condition. It is hallmarked around the rim of the neck of the rabbit’s head with the maker’s mark for Sampson Mordan & Co, the British silver mark, the London mark and the date letter. There is also a dedicatory engraving around the neck rim: ‘K & R, 26th May 1904’. The silver hallmarks are also stamped to the top of the left paw. To the base there are also a number of old dealer’s marks scratched in, together with ‘JACOB’ and the stamp ‘925’. The weight is 65.4g. Clearly this little rabbit has had an interesting and varied life.
