19th Century English Sterling silver fruit basket by James Charles Jay Chester

About the Item

A very decorative and versatile sterling silver Victorian fruit basket with typically Victorian busy and elaborate decoration. It is a high quality basket and it has been made from a good gauge of silver which gives it a sturdy feel and a deep shine. It really is in very good condition with the detail to the decoration is still crisp and defined.And crisp detailed piecing . Fully hallmarked Sterling Silver,Chester 1899 The makers mark is of Jay Richard Attenborough & co (James Charles Jay ) It is in an excellent condition with no damage or repairs. Free from inscriptions or denting. Some light surface wear that is noticeable on a close inspection. A good weight of 11 oz (312 grammes ) dimensions width 11 inches depth 8 inches and height 3 inches A little History of James Charles Ray (Richard Attenborough & co )Richard Attenborough & Co were, according to their own publicity, established as silversmiths in 1796. As well as being antique silver dealers they were leading silversmiths, making silver cups and presentation silver for many organisations throughout the 20th century, including The Peace Cup, presented to the Mansion House, London in 1918, and The Miss World trophy 1955. James Charles Jay acquired the firm in 1887, which became James Jay Ltd in 1897, and in 1904 the firm became Jay, Richard Attenborough & Co. Ltd.
