About the Item

6 Russian Style Enamel Spoons, George Edward & Sons, Glasgow, 1888 This exquisite set of six enamelled sterling silver spoons, measuring 4.5 inches wide x .75 wide x .25 high, is a stunning example of the superior craftsmanship of George Edward & Sons, a distinguished Glasgow-based firm of manufacturing goldsmiths, jewellers, and silversmiths. Housed in the original red leather, measuring 7 inches wide x 5.5 inches deep x 1 inch high, fitted case bearing the firm's prestigious mark and their Royal Warrant inscription "To The Queen," these spoons reflect the luxury and refinement associated with late Victorian-era Glasgow silversmithing. Design and Craftsmanship: Each spoon features vibrant turquoise enamel with intricate white and silver-gilt scrollwork in delicate patterns, showcasing the guilloché enamel technique, renowned for its shimmering, engine-turned designs beneath translucent enamel. The gilded bowl interiors of the spoons offer a warm contrast to the cool enamel tones, highlighting the luxurious finish. The twisted silver-gilt handles are elegantly detailed, culminating in flared terminals with matching enamelwork, reflecting the influence of Russian-style enameled silver, which was popular in late 19th-century Britain. The pearled border around the spoon bowls further accentuates the refined decorative aesthetic, adding depth and texture. Historical Significance: George Edward & Sons earned their esteemed place in Glasgow’s silversmithing history by creating luxurious silver and enamelware of the finest quality. Their Royal Warrant attests to their role as official suppliers to the monarchy, signifying that their work met the rigorous standards of the royal household. This set of spoons exemplifies the firm's ability to merge Continental design influences with British silversmithing traditions, appealing to the sophisticated tastes of their elite clientele. The combination of vibrant guilloché enamel, gilded finishes, and original presentation case makes this set highly collectible.
