About the Item

We are delighted to offer this wonderful Georgian solid silver tobacco/snuff box with the marks of James Phipps I (London) c.1770. This silver circular box is made with superb proportions, larger than the norm yet not too bulky to disrupt usage; it has the most wonderful feel in hand where the curved edges and the size fits perfectly in one's palm. Interestingly, whilst snuff boxes normally have a hinge (between the lid and base), tobacco boxes of the 18th century tend to have a relatively simple 'pull-off' design. Whilst the precise reason for such a design choice is not ascertained (as of yet), some theories suggest that loose tobacco leaves for pipes would require more time and preparation in comparison to pinching snuff which could be done on the go. As such, tobacco boxes did not require a hinge as it would be used whilst sitting down/placing the box and lid down as opposed to a snuff box which would be rapidly opened and closed for a single pinch. Such unique factors in comparison to a snuff box and the scarcity of such tobacco boxes make these boxes a further collectable item. Furthermore, due to its accommodating size, in the modern day, it may also be used practically for carrying pills, mints or small sweets on the go in a distinguished and stylish manner and bound to be a conversation starter for the keen-eyed. The box also features a lovely hand-engraved period crest for the M'Call family that completes the overall Georgian classical look with a fine, minimalist elegance to its overall aesthetic and antique patina colouration. The box is only hallmarked with the maker's mark 'I.P' for James Phipps I of London. A wonderful classic Georgian piece of silverware remaining in excellent antique condition despite being over 200 years old. *Please note: all images with other items are for display purposes only, this listing is for the item mentioned in the title. We are pleased to have acquired another similar, smaller snuff/tobacco box by the same maker. This is available for purchase separately or please kindly do contact us for further details. SIZE Size (mm) W:80mm H:27mm Size (inches) W:3.14 H:1.06 Weight: 79 grams (2.53 troy oz) CONDITION Great Condition - The box is in great antique condition with no issues, the closure of the lid is excellent and tight - very impressive considering its age. Antique Georgian Sterling Silver Basket/Bowl Rococo Shell - Robert Garrard 1804
Located in London, GB
We are delighted to offer this magnificent Georgian solid silver basket made in London, 1804 by the acclaimed Royal gold/silversmith, Garrard (marks for Robert Garrard). Garrard (founded in 1735, surviving the test of time, still producing fine silverware and jewellery today), throughout history has been serving and producing exceptional pieces of silver and jewellery for the British Royal Family. The firm was appointed Crown Jeweller by Queen Victoria in 1843 which may come as no surprise upon examining the exceptional quality, craftsmanship and designs of their silverware/jewellery. It may come as no surprise that this George III basket presents some of the most desirable and impressive characteristics and embellishments. The basket is made in the manner of George II Rococo design and features ornate scrolled edges, rococo shells and intricate piercings. It is made from a wonderfully sturdy and thick gauge, resulting in the basket weighing just a touch over 1.4kg in spite of its relatively hollow and pierced design. This can be further appreciated when handling in person whereby the hefty weight is supported by the thick handle, presenting a reassuring feel of exceeding quality. The balance between asymmetric scrolls and the overall proportions of this basket is majestic and the intricate repeated piercings of crosses and anthemion motifs allow for light to shine through, further elevating its splendour on a table or display. Such baskets would have been originally owned and used by the upper echelons of society including the aristocracy and wealthy families acting as both a practical and symbolic dining accoutrament of prosperity. This basket has a central coat of arms hand engraved. We believe that even today, such baskets are still highly versatile and wonderful objects of decoration and practicality whether be it in an antique setting or a juxtaposing centrepiece in a modern interior. Owing to it generous size and elaborate design, it could be used to serve bread or cake in a party setting or perhaps hold some fruit on your dining table in the most opulent manner. Overall, an impressive and ornate example of fine Georgian silverware, ideal for immediately elevating the ambience of a setting and adding a magnificent silvery presence to your interior. A full set of English hallmarks is present on the base - the handle of the basket is unmarked. *Please note: all images with other items are for display purposes only, this listing is for the item mentioned in the title. SIZE Size (cm) L:34.5cm W:28.5cm H:22.5cm (to top of handle) Size (inches) L:13.5 W:11.22 H:8.85 (to top of handle) Weight: 1402 grams (45.07 Troy oz) CONDITION Good Condition - The basket is in good overall antique condition considering its age and type. There are some areas of old restoration with one pierced section having been repaired and some slight splits around the feet of the basket. Due to its ornate design, this is not very apparent or visible however we have mentioned it for accuracy. Areas with the most significant restoration have been shown in the last image. The central coat of arms engraving...
