Antique Solid Silver Georgian Asparagus Tongs, Leveson-Gower/Sutherland Crest
By William Eley & William Fearn
Located in London, GB
We are delighted to have acquired and be able to offer this pair of solid silver Georgian asparagus tongs made by William Eley & William Fearn in London, 1820.
The tongs feature a wonderful classical style with the terminals of the handles presenting a scalloped design and the entire edge accented by a contrasting border formed by two fine lines.
A noteworthy crest is present on the end of the handle with it bearing the crest of Leveson-Gower ('wolf statant collared and chained') and the other crest for the Sutherland Clan, described as a 'cat-a-mountain salient'.
The tongs were eventually discovered at Dunrobin Castle which is situated in Sutherland (Highland area of Scottland), and was/is a very ornate and extravagant castle that is still standing today.
During the period this piece was made, the 1st Duke of Sutherland, George Granville Leveson-Gower owned extensive land which eventually resulted in him being one of the wealthiest individuals in Britain to such an extent that titles and speculation such as "The Leviathan...

Antique Georgian Sterling Silver Basket/Bowl Rococo Shell - Robert Garrard 1804
Located in London, GB
We are delighted to offer this magnificent Georgian solid silver basket made in London, 1804 by the acclaimed Royal gold/silversmith, Garrard (marks for Robert Garrard).
Garrard (founded in 1735, surviving the test of time, still producing fine silverware and jewellery today), throughout history has been serving and producing exceptional pieces of silver and jewellery for the British Royal Family.
The firm was appointed Crown Jeweller by Queen Victoria in 1843 which may come as no surprise upon examining the exceptional quality, craftsmanship and designs of their silverware/jewellery.
It may come as no surprise that this George III basket presents some of the most desirable and impressive characteristics and embellishments. The basket is made in the manner of George II Rococo design and features ornate scrolled edges, rococo shells and intricate piercings.
It is made from a wonderfully sturdy and thick gauge, resulting in the basket weighing just a touch over 1.4kg in spite of its relatively hollow and pierced design. This can be further appreciated when handling in person whereby the hefty weight is supported by the thick handle, presenting a reassuring feel of exceeding quality.
The balance between asymmetric scrolls and the overall proportions of this basket is majestic and the intricate repeated piercings of crosses and anthemion motifs allow for light to shine through, further elevating its splendour on a table or display.
Such baskets would have been originally owned and used by the upper echelons of society including the aristocracy and wealthy families acting as both a practical and symbolic dining accoutrament of prosperity. This basket has a central coat of arms hand engraved.
We believe that even today, such baskets are still highly versatile and wonderful objects of decoration and practicality whether be it in an antique setting or a juxtaposing centrepiece in a modern interior. Owing to it generous size and elaborate design, it could be used to serve bread or cake in a party setting or perhaps hold some fruit on your dining table in the most opulent manner.
Overall, an impressive and ornate example of fine Georgian silverware, ideal for immediately elevating the ambience of a setting and adding a magnificent silvery presence to your interior.
A full set of English hallmarks is present on the base - the handle of the basket is unmarked.
