Antique Imperial Russian Solid Silver Spoons with Cloisonne Enamel c.1882

About the Item

We are delighted to offer this beautiful pair of antique Imperial Russian solid silver enamel spoons made in Moscow c.1882-1899 with marks for Vasily Agafonov. This pair is of a larger size than a normal pair of enamelled Russian spoons (larger than a teaspoon and smaller than a serving spoon) and as a result is immediately impressionable even upon a quick glance. The magnificent cloisonne-work is typical of fine 19th c. Russian silver enamelware and its generous proportions allow the spoons to be embellished plentifully. In spite of what could be a very bland and utilitarian item, such spoons have been decorated and treated as an object of vertu to display a high degree of craftsmanship, artistry and design. Such contrast and artistic juxtaposition between utility and ornamentation is particularly delightful on these pieces and serve as such a wonderful aesthetic contrast in interior settings among other silverware or as a highlighting piece on a table. The colourful enamel and delicacy are almost jewel-like and would also gracefully compliment jewellery collections. The bowl and terminals have been gorgeously enamelled with a range of vivid colours, each immaculately filled in each 'cloison' (the compartment between the twist rope borders) shaped as various scrolls and foliate motifs. The stem of the spoon features a lovely writhen/twisted design and the bowl of the spoon has a beautiful light 'lemon' gilt tone. Overall, the quality feel in hand, the intricate silverwork and the colourful enamelling are delightful and make for both a splendid collectable and display piece of fine 19th c. Russian silverware. Both spoons are marked with matching hallmarks for Vasily Agafonov, 84 Zolotnik silver standard and the combined Moscow mark indicating its assaying c.1882-1899. *Please note: all images with other items are for display purposes only, this listing is for the title item only. • Antique Victorian Solid Silver Gilt Naturalistic Leaf Spoon Pair, 1842
    By Sebastian Crespel II
    Located in London, GB
We are delighted to offer this fine and exquisite pair of early Victorian solid silver tea spoons made in London 1842 with the maker's mark of Sebastian Crespell. The pair features a highly ornate and desirable 'naturalistic' design with the entirety of the spoon-shaped as a leaf and branch. Intricate engravings on the leaf bowls and the realistic form of the stem/branch indicate a high level of craftsmanship and artistry by the silversmith. Upon close inspection, the asymmetric and naturally flowing design is further apparent and is a delightful touch. Not only are these spoons practical for a wide variety of uses from tea to desserts, but are a modest yet discerning addition to any collection or interior decor for a sophisticated and nature-inspired look. The pair is gilded with a yellowish/lemon hue that has been worn and patinated in a very attractive colour/tone. A full set of English hallmarks are present on the reverse side of the bowl. • Antique Georgian Solid Silver Tea Caddy Spoon Vine Leaf Design, Joseph Willmore
    By Joseph Willmore
    Located in London, GB
We are delighted to offer this wonderful little solid silver tea caddy spoon made by Joseph Willmore in Birmingham, 1814. The spoon is beautifully crafted in the form of a single vine leaf with an accurate and intricate design ranging from the stem (handle) of the leaf to the different textures (stippled & embossed silver) on the surface of the spoon. The centre of the spoon is embossed in the form of a bunch of grapes with its stem conjoining to the thicker vine handle. Such spooms would have traditionally been used to scoop some tea leaves out of a tea caddy/canister, however, with some creative ideas why not try some new uses such as serving spices or even as a small canapé...
