Antique Kwan Wo Style Chinese Silver and Shell Butterfly Sweetmeat Caviar Dish

About the Item

An antique silver and pinctada shell Chinese sweetmeat or caviar serving dish in the style of Kwan Wo. The double pinctada (a pearl oyster species) shell wings are gently formed with a delicate, rounded wing. The body is silver with incised and applied details. The antennae are a coiled silver wire topped by two half spheres. The head is round in form with two large eyes and stylized eyelashes underneath all on a stipple detailed head. The elongated body has a similar stipple detail punctuated by bands across the width of the neck and body. The lower wings are attached to the body and feature beautifully detailed incised and raised designs with a scalloped profile. While I do not see any markings, this piece bears striking similarity to those crafted by Kwan Wo. From the Pushkin Antiques site, "Active between 1875 – 1940. Kwan Wo was an important Chinese retail silversmith, located in Canton and Hong Kong. The manufacturer was among the most prolific Chinese retail silversmiths, whose store could offer a wide range of silver pieces of all shapes and styles. Kwan Wo products did not belong to any particular style or movement. On the contrary, the manufacturer experimented with styles and shapes, “creating something totally Chinese-looking even though the object and its use were not particularly Chinese per se” (A.
