Antique Pair of Sterling Silver Coasters by Joseph Scammell

About the Item

A fine and impressive pair of antique Georgian English sterling silver coasters; an addition to our wine and drinks related silverware collection These fine antique George III sterling silver coasters have an octagonal shaped form onto a stepped base. Each coaster is embellished with a band of pierced and pin struck decoration to the upper portion and plain pin struck borders to each panel. The decoration to the body of each piece incorporates a pin struck bordered shaped cartouche displaying a contemporary bright cut engraved crest. The coasters are fitted with fine and impressive turned mahogany bases. Each coaster retains the original green baize to the underside. These impressive Georgian coasters are highly desirable due to design and medial size. Condition These antique coasters are a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent presentation condition. There is a minor surface chip to the corner of one mahogany base; this does not detract from the aesthetic appearance of these fine original coasters. The pin struck and bright cut engraved decoration is all very crisp. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of each coaster have wear; the nature of the coasters dictates the location of the hallmarks, resulting in their shallow struck nature and subsequent wear, in keeping with age. In this instance the hallmarks remain legible in keeping with age. Dimensions Diameter 12cm/4.7" Height 3.4cm/1.3" Maker: Joseph Scammell Origin: London, England Date: 1792 Video: A video of this fine piece is available upon request. Reflections in photography may detract from the true representation of these pieces of Georgian silverware.
