Antique Sterling Silver Fruit Serving Set
About the Item
An exceptional, fine and impressive pair of antique Victorian English sterling silver fruit / dessert serving set; an addition to our silver flatware collection
This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver fruit serving set consists of a pair of fruit serving spoons and a sugar sifter.
The anterior surface of each Old English pattern handle is embellished with impressive bright cut engraved floral and foliate decoration, incorporating a vacatant cartouche to each terminal.
The impressive bowl of each spoon is ornamented with further bright cut engraved floral and foliate decoration, in addition to a bird design to the centre.
The bowl of the sugar sifter is embellished with a florated pierced design with paralleling bright cut engraved and wrigglework decorated borders.
The reverse surface of each handle is plain and unembellished, with a rounded heel to the bowl.
These antique silver spoons and ladle are fitted to the original hinged leatherette box with satin and velvet lined interior, securing with a push fit catch.
The silver ladle was crafted by Christopher & Thomas Wilkes Barker in 1802, whereas the serving spoons were made by James Beebe in 1832 and William M Traies in 1825.
NOTE: To embellished early plain pieces with bright cut engraved decoration was common practice in the late Victorian period. These pieces would then be fitted to original boxes, which converted them into presentation pieces; this embellishment will have been completed circa 1890.
Condition
This antique fruit serving set is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.
Each component has been professionally polished and is in presentation condition.
The box is also in presentation condition.
The bright cut engraved decoration is all very crisp.
Full hallmarks struck to the reverse of each handle are all very clear.
Reflections in photography may detract from the true representation of this antique silver spoons and ladle set in the UK.

- Alan Adler Sterling Silver & Walnut Modernist Hand Wrought Serving Coffee SetLocated in New York, NYThis elegant sterling silver and walnut coffee set was realized by the legendary designer Allan Adler in the United States circa 1950. The set features a coffee pot, sugar bowl and spoon, and creamer. Created in sterling silver, this set showcases Allan Adler's signature aesthetic- a kind of traditional modernism applying a pared down minimalist perspective to classical design elements. Here the silhouettes of the pieces look traditional but feature idiosyncratic details that clearly indicate their modernism- as fresh looking today as when it was made. The hand rubbed walnut handles are hewn in an amorphic shape that flares asymmetrically at its end. It is inescapably a modern form. It is pared, however, with historical language (from Art Nouveau for instance) that roots the pieces in a more traditionalist place. They feature stylized vine motifs on the finial of the coffee pot top and leaf motifs that trace the circular bases. The protuberant bodies created in lustrous sterling salver taper at each end. This is an outstanding example of Adler's practice that represents his inimitable aesthetic at its very best. It is sure to delight collectors of his work, as well as those with a penchant for beautifully crafted and special objects. It is signed "Adler Sterling" on the base and is in excellent vintage condition. Adler began his career as an apprentice in 1938, designing silverware and inspired by the design of the early 1900s specifically Art Nouveau. His name became associated with Hollywood glamour in the early 1940s. he was commissioned to design mini-Oscars for Academy Award winners, crowns for Miss Universe and Miss USA, and silver bowls and candlesticks for celebrities and dignitaries. During John F. Kennedy's presidential campaign, Adler was commissioned to create a silver coffee urn...Category
