Antique SterlingSilver Rococo Shell Dish in the Manner of Paul de Lamerie - 1908

About the Item

We are delighted to offer this splendid antique solid silver shell dish made in London 1908 by the Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Co Ltd. Silver connoisseurs will likely immediately recognise this design which pays homage to Paul de Lamerie's original design. Lamerie was highly regarded in his time with commissions from various royal families across Europe and is considered to be the greatest silversmith working in England in the 18th century. Ornate and exquisite even to the untrained eye, this design is nothing short of spectacular with each and every element being effortlessly elegant yet intricately planned out in the making. The entire dish is shaped in the form of a scallop shell with a single raised handle towards the base which fluidly extends into a figural terminal. Not only does the handle assist in moving the dish, but the manner in which it has been incorporated in the larger design is true to the Rococo style of fluidity, opulence and asymmetry. The dish itself features a fluted design with the outer section being finely pieced with ornate motifs that contrast the other silver surfaces and allow for light to shine through. The edge also serves an important artistic role by presenting a thick gadrooned border as if to 'contain' the overspilling Rococo motifs and maintain some form of geometric boundary. Following and accurately replicating the characteristics of Rococo/Rocaille design, this dish also presents itself in a way that invites the onlooker to view it from all angles. Consequently, this dish excites no matter the angle; for example, from the side, a slight slope towards the handle is evident, from above the spectacular piercing is on full display and towards the base, three cast dolphin figural feet can be seen supporting the bowl. Whilst this dish is undoubtedly a collectable and must-have for Rococo enthusiasts, it may also be utilised practically in the modern day due to its compact and versatile size. Perhaps a serving of bonbons or treats after a meal or using this dish to hold some exquisite seafood starters will best suit its opulence and marine theme to the fullest. Aside from an unmistakable paring with other Rococo interiors and antiques, we absolutely believe that such wonderful historic objects with sophisticated artistic styles still have a place in modern designs and decors. It will perhaps serve as the contrasting piece which distinguishes and juxtaposes a more minimalistic modern setting. A set of English hallmarks are present on the base of the dish near the piercing. *Please note: all images with other items are for display purposes only, this listing is for the item mentioned in the title. • Antique Solid Sterling Silver 'Castle Top' Dish/Pin Tray, Windsor Castle - 1843
    Located in London, GB
We are delighted to offer this intricate Victorian solid silver small dish/pin tray with the marks of Taylor & Perry, Birmingham 1843. Despite its dainty and compact size, this dish is all but plain and simple and a fine example of 'castle top' silverware. The central portion depicts Windsor Castle from across the river and the surrounding engraved wreath of foliage and floral motifs form a slightly raised border. 'Castle Top' silverware, as the name suggests, refers to silverware with a castle depiction, normally found on snuff boxes, vinaigrettes and card cases. Occasionally, such collectable features can also be found on small baskets or dishes as is the case with this particular piece. Scenes of famous, popular and historic monuments were intricately and accurately depicted and made by leading silversmiths with the craftsmanship that enabled them to replicate the fine details of the real-life monuments. Such articles would have been usually gifted/purchased as a memoir of visiting such places or for those with a significant association with the depicted scenes. Due to this dish's compact size and raised edge, aside from a pin tray, it would make for a splendid jewellery bedside tray...
