Antique Victorian Set of Four Scottish Sterling Silver Card/Menu Holders

About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive pair of antique Victorian Scottish cast sterling silver card/menu holders; an addition to our animal related silverware collection. These exceptional Victorian cast sterling silver menu holders have a shaped heraldic blazon form onto a plain rounded wirework frame. The anterior surface of each piece is embellished a hallmarked cast sterling silver Peddie family blazon of a papingo holding in his beak an arrow, all above the bannered motto 'Consulto' - I deliberate. These antique silver menu holders are fitted with plain hallmarked wire loops to the posterior surface. Condition These antique silver menu holders are an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. Each piece has been professionally polished and is in presentation condition. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of each holder are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these pieces of antique silverware.     A fine and impressive set of six antique George V English sterling silver menu / card holders - boxed; an addition to our diverse dining silverware collection. These fine antique George V sterling silver menu card holders have circular shaped bases. Each piece is surmounted with an impressive wishbone* shaped design with a paralleling shaped support. The subtly convex bases are encircled with an elevated scalloped border. The weighted bases of these impressive menu holders are fitted with green baize to the underside. This impressive set of antique silver menu card holders is fitted to the original hinged leatherette box with satin and velvet lined interior, secured with two hinged catches. The interior of the box bears the retailer's mark 'Robert Stewart (Jewellers) Ltd, 75 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow'. A wishbone, otherwise known as the furcular, is a forked bone found in birds and some dinosaurs. The main function of the bone is to provide strength between the neck and breast, to protect the creature during battle. The Ancient Romans perceived this bone as a symbol of luck which allowed the progression of breaking a dried chicken wishbone apart whilst making a wish; this procedure determined the person with the bigger half would receive their wish or have good fortune.
