An Art Deco Silver Shabbat Candlesticks, Poland Circa 1920

About the Item

Art Deco silver Shabbat candlesticks from Poland circa 1920 are a notable piece of Judaica, reflecting both the artistic movements of the time and the rich cultural heritage of Polish Jewry. The Art Deco movement, which began in the 1920s, was characterized by its use of geometric shapes, clean lines, and bold designs. This style influenced a wide range of decorative arts, including Judaica, where traditional forms were reinterpreted with modern aesthetics. Poland had a vibrant Jewish community before World War II, known for its contributions to religious, cultural, and artistic life. Judaica from this period often showcases a blend of traditional Jewish themes with contemporary artistic movements like Art Deco. The candlesticks are set on a circular curved domed base with a baluster stem supporting the two tall symmetrical branches connected at the top with a stylized skyway. At the center of the skyway is a pierced star of David with an engraved name of "Raiza Fraiser" the women these candlesticks were used by. Set atop the branches are two goblet-shaped candlesticks with large and thick bobeches. The Art Deco design not only serves a functional purpose but also adds a modern artistic flair to the ritual. Judaica items from the Art Deco period, especially from Poland before WWII, are rare and highly valued by collectors. Their historical context and the quality of the craftsmanship add to their significance. They reflect the artistic trends of the early 20th century while preserving the cultural and religious traditions of Polish Jewry. Hallmarked at the side of the domed base 23.5ozt

A Silver Shabbat Candelabra, Austria Circa 1925
Located in New York, NY
An elegant silver Shabbat candelabra from Austria circa 1925 is an impressive piece of Judaica, blending the cultural and artistic heritage of Jewish traditions with the craftsmanship of early 20th-century Austrian silversmiths. The early 20th century in Austria was a period of artistic innovation, with the influence of the Vienna Secession movement, which emphasized modernist design and craftsmanship. Jewish communities in Austria had a rich tradition of creating and using beautifully crafted ritual objects for religious observance. Candelabra is set on a shaped stepped dome, part-fluted with a cylindrical stem capped by a similar floral-shaped dome. The branches for the candelabra artistically stem from an intertwined center and curve stylishly outward to hold the bobeches for the beaker-shaped cups. A pierced Star of David rests on top of the bell finial applied to the center stem. This design reflects a blend of traditional Jewish themes...
