Silver 'Smith' Inkwell. An Arts & Crafts Elkington & Co. silver inkwell desk piece. The silver topped glass ink well sits in a recess on the Elkington silver tray, both pieces hallmarked Birmingham 1926. There is an amusing say embossed around the outside of the tray, 'For Boring In The Tree Of Life, And Taking Out The Pith, There's No Man Can Excel The Man, Who Bears The Name Of Smith'. There is also an engraved inscription 'FJ to Alice McCormick CC'.

The table is raised on turned and fluted legs, united by an X-framed stretcher with bobbin turned decoration, the table edge is also carved. The underside of the table has a plaque with Shoolbred’s London trade details, ‘James Shoolbred & Co. Tottenham House, Tottenham Court Road, London’. James Shoolbred & Co were established in the 1820s and started out as a draper and later became a department store in Tottenham Court Road.
