Austrian Silver Galleried Oval Tray
About the Item
This is a particularly attractive example. First the "navette" shape is most unusual, more often found in gem settings than trays. The gallery, pierced with scrolling stylised acanthus, is as good an example of cutwork as you will see. This has been made by a skilled silversmith with a fret-saw. The gallery rises elegantly at each end incorporating the handles, and is finished by a beaded band. It was very expensive to make such trays and consequently they are not common.
