About the Item

Bailey, Banks & Biddle sterling silver porringer bowl, with a pierced handle and curvilinear motifs adorning the rim. It measures 7 3/8'' in depth by 4 3/4'' in diameter by 1 1/2'' in height, weighs 6.7 troy ounces, and bears hallmarks as shown. It is dedicated to the birth of Evelyn Linderman on December 3rd, 1893. Evelyn Linderman (1893-1919) was the daughter of Robert Packer Linderman (1863-1903), who was educated at Lehigh University, which was notably founded by his grandfather, Judge Asa Packer, and who became an official of the Bethlehem Steel Company, a corporation with $15,000,000 capital, of which he was president. R.B. Linderman's father's home was later owned by Charles M. Schwab. Bailey & Kitchen, as it was originally known, was founded in Philadelphia in 1832, by Joseph Trowbridge Bailey (1806-1854) and Andrew B. Kitchen (died 1850). The partnership was dissolved in November 1846. It was reformed with new partners as Bailey & Co. in 1841, and on March 1, 1878, again re-established as Bailey Banks & Biddle. After 1870, they resold silver from a variety of manufacturers. At the turn of the century, Bailey Banks & Biddle was commissioned by the U.S. government to update the Great Seal of the United States; its design today remains the official version of the seal.
