About the Item
Peter and William Bateman sterling silver Georgian carafe or pitcher from 1812, with fluted motifs, stylized natural and bird motifs, as well as a later dedication to Sir David Evans. This elegant carafe measures 8 1/2'' in height by 9 1/4'' from handle to spout by 6'' in depth, weighs 34.9 troy ounces, and bears hallmarks as shown.
The Bateman family are the most famous silversmiths of the Georgian era. The lineage was started by Hester Bateman in 1761. William was second son of Jonathan and Ann Bateman and the grandson of Hester. In 1834 silver commissions for the great royal retail firm Rundell, Bridge & Rundell were carried out by the grand scale manufacturing establishment run by William Bateman junior who was the great-grandson of Hester Bateman and the firm effectively became royal silversmiths to King William IV.
