A Bezalel Silver Snuff Box Jerusalem Circa 1910

About the Item

A Bezalel silver snuff box from Jerusalem, circa 1910, is a beautifully crafted piece, representing the fusion of traditional Jewish motifs with the early 20th-century Bezalel art style. The Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts, founded in 1906, was known for promoting the revival of Jewish art and craftsmanship, and this snuff box reflects that heritage. The box is rectangular, with polished silver edges and intricate filigree circular wreaths adorning the exterior with floral arranged beads and turquoise stones at their centers. The lid features an embedded central tablet shape, with (possibly) a bone panel carved with a portrait of an elderly gentleman sniffing a pinch of snuff. The word "Shadchan" is engraved underneath the portrait in Hebrew The box’s craftsmanship is highly detailed, reflecting the high standards of the Bezalel workshops. The piece has a smooth, polished interior and displays a soft patina from age, giving it a rich, historical character. Hallmarked at the bottom of the box.
