About the Item

Chinese Export Silver Bowl, of round form with applied prunus around two-thirds of the bowl leaving the remainder plain, in keeping with Chinese tradition seen on paintings where blank space is left. The foot has a very unusual ruyi pattern embossed and chased on it allowing the bowl to be supported on four of the curves, and there is a narrow band of Greek key pattern chased around the lower part of the body just above where it joins the base. The bowl was retailed by the Shanghai firm of Luen Wo around 1890, and the silversmith mark is 麥芬 (Mai Fen).
