About the Item
A wonderful Chinese export silver bamboo motif tankard by Luen Hing, circa 1920, Shanghai, China.
The large tankard with a slightly bulging and tapered body. The tankard decorated with a wonderfully organic design of leafy bamboo. Sparrows flit and perch within the bamboo grove.
The elegant handle follows the bamboo theme, formed as a bamboo pole with a dramatic curve. A delightful beetle or ladybug crawls along the apogee of the handle.
Bamboo is an important plant is Chinese culture. Its presence in art is rooted in deep symbolism. As a Stand alone plant, it represents Virtue and honor. It is also part of the "Four Gentleman", a grouping that includes chrysanthemum, orchid, and plum, each plant representing one of the Four Seasons, with bamboo representing summer. Bamboo is also one of the "Three Friends of Winter", along with pine and plum, representing resilience.
The underside with marks for Luen Hing and 90% silver purity. The Chinese character "Gao" is also stamped to the base. According to Adrien von Ferscht, this identifes the artisan workshop.
