An Early German Silver Hanukkah Lamp, Berlin Circa 1817
About the Item
A superb example of early 19th-century German Judaica, made by Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Borcke, this Hanukkah lamp, crafted in Berlin circa 1817-1819 embodies the elegance and refinement of the period’s silverwork. Fashioned entirely from silver, the lamp stands on four stylized, splayed legs that lift a thick, rectangular base with a commanding presence and weight. The upper front portion of the base features a hinged lid that opens to reveal eight deep, rectangular oil wells. Each well is topped with a protruding wick holder, designed to extend outward gracefully in perfect symmetry and balance.
Rising behind the base is a dramatic and highly ornate backplate, executed in masterful repoussé and chasing. The design bursts forth in rich Renaissance Revival fashion, with flourishing acanthus leaves and floral sprays tied together at the center to form a grand, stylized fleur-de-lis. The edges of the backplate are delicately pierced and shaped into foliate contours, demonstrating the precision and fluidity characteristic of German silversmithing during this era.
At the apex of the backplate, a tall, scrolling foliate stem arches forward to support the servant lamp (shamash), rendered as a large, bowl-shaped cup with a centrally raised wick spout. This elegant feature not only crowns the composition but enhances its functionality with sculptural flair.
Affixed to the reverse is a flat, pointed suspension bracket, enabling the lamp to be mounted on a wall—recalling the traditional custom of hanging Hanukkah lamps near doorways or within the home to publicize the miracle of the holiday.
A rare and exceptional survival, this lamp is both a functional ritual object and an artistic triumph, combining deep cultural resonance with extraordinary silverwork. Its bold form, ornate detailing, and intelligent construction make it a singular treasure within the canon of 19th-century European Judaica.
Hallmarked and stamped with the Maker's Mark at the bottom of the base.

A Unique Silver Arts and Crafts Hanukkah Lamp, made in Germany Circa 1930.
This Hanukkah Lamp is truly unique and has a few different styles of craftmanship and designs that make up its structure. Seemingly this menorah looks to be made for children.
The shaft and the base are remarkably executed. the light hammering on the base referenced the Arts and Crafts movement while the shaft is designed in an Art Deco fashion. However, the cut-out pattern of the palm leaves and the engraved Stars of David are of a lower standard; the engraving in particular is sloppy and crude.
Yet the cups and the finial and the small bells at the end of the leaves are well done- the balls cite the influence of the Secession, yet another art trend.
Whatever may be for the apparent contradiction in the quality of workmanship, this is an interesting Rarity.
Hallmarked and signed at the bottom of the hammered base.
