About the Item

A superb example of 19th-century Polish Judaica, this handcrafted silver spice tower demonstrates masterful silversmithing and refined decorative artistry. The tower rests upon an octagonal domed and stepped base, delicately engraved with elegant foliate and scrolling motifs. Rising from the base is a tapering cylindrical stem which supports the central spice compartment. The main body of the tower is formed in three distinct tiers: the lowest is octagonal, with each of its eight panels filled with intricate foliate filigree and undulating scrollwork. Above this, two rounded filigree tiers are harmoniously composed, lending a fluid, architectural rhythm to the structure. Crowning the tower is a finely modeled conical spire, surmounted by a distinctive waving flag—entirely executed in filigree. Unlike the typical flat silver flags found on many spice towers, this uniquely formed filigree flag is mounted on a rotating pole fitted directly into the spire’s apex, adding a dynamic and expressive element to the piece. Crafted in Poland circa 1860, this spice tower is a quintessential expression of traditional Eastern European Judaica—combining ritual function with ornamental beauty through the art of handcrafted silver filigree. Hallmarked 12 on the the octagonal base Weight: 6.34ozt or 200 gr
