George II Antique Sterling Silver Oil and Vinegar Set by Samuel Wood in 1751

About the Item
Hallmarked in London in 1751 by Samuel Wood, this striking, George II, antique sterling silver oil and vinegar set, is in the Rococo taste, and is engraved to one side with a crest. The oil and vinegar set measures 7.5"(19cm) tall, by 7.5"(19cm) wide, by 4.5"(12cm) deep, and the stand weighs 14.7 troy ounces. The tops of the bottles are unmarked.
The crest and motto are likely to be that of the Fitzgerald family, the Earl of Kildare.
The motto translates as "Grateful for kindness"
The crest is that of a monkey, and was taken by the family in remembrance of a story regarding Thomas Fitzgerald, the father of the first Earl. When Thomas was an infant his father and grandfather were killed during the battle of Callan. Legend has it that the infant Thomas was left in his cradle at Tralee by his attendants, who fled on hearing news of the battle. He was carried to safety by a baboon kept by the family to the top of the highest steeple in the abbey, exhibited around the battlements, and kept safe during the ongoing battle.
