About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive, large pair of antique George V English sterling silver ginger jars; an addition to our silver teaware collection These exceptional, fine and impressive antique George V sterling silver tea caddies have a circular baluster shaped form. The surface of each antique caddy is embellished with exceptional chased foliate decoration, incorporating a putto* design to either side. The plain cylindrical neck of each box is plain and embellished with an applied moulded border to the lower portion. These caddies are fitted with very impressive domed cylindrical push fit covers encircled with chased layered leaf decoration, emanating from the original foliate decorated finials. Due to their shape and size these exceptional and large examples of antique silverware were originally ginger jars, however, these versatile boxes could be used for a multitude of functions including oversized tea caddies and covered vases. Such boxes are becoming increasingly difficult to locate and are rare to the market. These ginger jars/caddies are the finest of their type you could hope to acquire. * In art and culture, a putto (plural: putti) is a chubby male child, usually nude and occasionally bearing wings. Condition These large antique silver ginger jars are an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. Each box has been professionally polished and is in presentation condition. The chased decoration is very sharp. Full hallmarks struck to the rim of the caddies and part hallmarks to the sleeve of the covers are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the superior gauge of silver. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these pieces of antique silver teaware.
