About the Item
Large, Georgian (George IV) Period, sterling silver-mounted wood wine/champagne bottle coaster, Sheffield, England, year-hallmarked for 1820, Thomas and John Settle - makers. Lovely floral design on outside; border is reeded and scalloped. Inside the coaster, the wooden bottom is inset with a sterling silver disc that is etched with a central armorial of a heron (or stork) drinking from a large sea-snail shell. Underside of coaster is partially covered in green felt. Outer dimensions of coaster are 7 inches diameter x 2 1/2 inches high; inner dimensions are 5 inches diameter x 2 inches high. Dark areas on sterling silver in photos are reflections. In very good antique condition.
