About the Item

A Stunning German Silver-Gilt Torah Pointer by Lazarus Posen made in Frankfurt or Berlin in the early 19th Century. Lazarus Posen, was a Jewish artist and engraver who lived during the 19th century. He is particularly renowned for his work in the art of micrograph which is a Jewish art form that involves creating images, patterns, or texts using minute Hebrew letters. Posen’s micrography pieces are noted for their complexity and attention to detail. Posen’s contributions highlight the intersection of art, culture, and tradition within the Jewish community, showcasing the enduring appeal and creativity of his unique form of artistic expression. This Torah pointer is a classic example of Posen's artistic ability and craftsmanship. The tapering square paneled pointer exhibits a gadroon-styled finial with an acorn-shaped knop and suspension ring. Applied to a square pedestal with stylized fleur de lis motifs with chased lower sprouting buds. Along the column-shaped main handle is a dedication engraved in Hebrew: “A donation from Eliezer ben Solomon and his wife, 5679 [1919].” Long acanthus leaf scrolling motifs are embossed on the upper part of the column leading to the top where there is an armor-sleeved applied pointing finger. Hallmarked beneath the palm of the pointing finger. Provenance: Halpern Judaica Collection
