About the Item

An Israeli silver mezuzah case from Jerusalem circa 1950 embodies both the religious traditions and the burgeoning artistic expressions of the newly established State of Israel. This era was marked by a blend of revivalist art and modern influences, reflective of the optimism and cultural renaissance of the time. The establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 was a monumental event for Jews worldwide. This period saw a flourishing of cultural and artistic endeavors as the new nation sought to forge its identity. Jerusalem, with its historical and spiritual significance, became a center for artists and craftsmen who aimed to create a distinctive Israeli style of Judaica. Artistic Silver repoussé work brings out the artistic expression of this Mezuzah case. Shaped in a column form with a floral sunburst at its head and two neat beaded patterns at its sides with a seven-branch menorah at the lower center. The words "Shadai" (the name of God) written at the center and "Jerusalem" at the base, are prominently displayed in Hebrew on the case. This Israeli silver mezuzah case combines religious importance, cultural heritage, and artistic craftsmanship, making it a cherished and valuable piece of history. The mezuzah case not only fulfills its religious function but also serves as a beautiful testament to the early years of the State of Israel and its vibrant artistic community. Marked at the back of the Mezuzah case. .44ozt.
